Gold medal from the 2016 Rio Olympics
This past summer we got to witness the best athletes in the world compete in the 2016 summer Olympics held in Rio, Brazil. With 11,544 athletes coming from across the globe, this year’s Olympics marked some of the most memorable moments in history that will be talked about for years to come. Madison Dodger Online is bringing some of the highlights.
First we dive into the pool with Michael Phelps and his record setting performance where he received five gold medals for the men’s 200m freestyle relay, the 200m butterfly, the 100m medley relay, the 100m freestyle relay, and the 200m individual relay. Placing second in the men’s 100m butterfly, Phelps also received one silver medal making his medal collection a total of six for the Rio Olympics and a whopping total of 28 for all the olympics he’s competed in. After winning his last 5 gold medals, Phelps announced that these would be his last Olympics and that he would retire from his career as a professional swimmer, focusing now on his family. Phelps has definitely had a good run, or in this case a good swim, but after breaking a record of winning 23 gold medals, now is the time to hang up the goggles and swim cap.
Next we jump onto the beam with Simone Biles who came all the way from Columbus, Ohio. Biles left Rio with four gold medals for the women’s vault, women’s team all-around, women’s floor exercise, women’s individual all-around and lastly one bronze medal for the women’s beam. Simone’s jumps and flips really left the audience in awe and received an almost perfect score for her floor routine. Hopefully we will be seeing more of Simone Biles in future Olympic games.
Last but most certainly not least, we have Usain Bolt whose last name definitely describes him as a runner. Known as the fasted human being of all time, Bolt received three gold medals for the men’s 100m relay, the men’s 200m sprint, and the men’s 100m sprint. Coming all the way from Jamaica, Bolt is considered the fastest sprinter in the world and possibly the best track and field athlete as well. After his impending win, Bolt said to the reporters “There you go, I am the greatest. I’m going to stay up late and have fun. I knew this would happen when I started out.”
These three athletes definitely deserve the medals they worked incredibly hard training for as well as all the other athletes who participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
