School Election 2016
Last week MHS held its annual school elections which determines what students will be the office for the following school year. This year’s election was the most competitive in comparison to recent years at the high school. During the election this year many of the candidates made funny posters and videos to make the school aware that they are running. Additionally, on the day of the actual election many of the candidates passed out candies or baked goods to encourage students to go on and vote.
This year, Owen Matthews and Matt Haughey were elected as president and vice president. MDO had the chance to sit down with Owen and as her a couple of questions about her upcoming term in office.
MDO: What are the main responsibilities of the school president?
Owen: The main responsibility of the school president is running the student council. This mostly involves organizing weekly meetings, managing funds, and spreading information to the student body! The student council is in charge of all things that encourage school-wide bonding. This includes dances, spirit weeks, pep rallies, and Faculty Night Live! Although the student-principal advisory committee voices student opinions to the administration, as president of the student body, I will be expected to help with that as well.
MDO: Is there anything you plan to improve when you become school president?
Owen: I really hope to get more underclassmen representation on the student council. This year, there were only two sophomores and zero freshmen. I think that integrating younger students into the council will make sure that we understand the needs of the younger students and it will enable us to spread information to underclassmen more efficiently! Anyone can come to meetings, and I hope that I can really make sure that is clear. Also, I want to ensure that there are three pep rallies a year (one for every sports season), and I would love to lengthen them. I have some ideas for new activities that we can introduce, such as bubble soccer (aka knockerballs). I also would love to introduce homecoming to MHS! During football season, school spirit is at its peak, and I feel like we could really funnel this spirit into a fun weekend! This weekend would include a bonfire and hopefully a dance. Finally, I want to make information more accessible, and accessible earlier. I believe that clarity will promote participation in and attendance to student council related functions.
MDO wishes the best of luck to all the of the school officers next year!

I think a homecoming dance is a great idea! I agree that school spirit IS at its highest during football season and it is something to be taken advantage of. A homecoming dance is something the MHS student body has been missing for years now and I believe bringing it back would make most of the students happy.
