The Kesha Story: All the Details
Last week, the popstar Kesha was denied a court injunction that would have freed her from her contract with sony and working with her allegedly abusive music producer Doctor Luke. Doctor Luke has been the producer for all of Kesha’s albums, and it is said that he has been abusive towards Kesha over the course of years.
In 2013 Kesha had put herself in rehab for an eating disorder. Later, Kesha’s mother had told “People” magazine that Dr. Luke had pressure her to lose weight and even compared her to a refrigerator. Additionally, Kesha claims that when she was intoxicated, Dr. Luke gave her what he called “sober pills”, which turned out to be a date rape drug. The next morning Kesha woke up in Dr. Luke’s apartment with no recollection of how she got there. After that night Kesha went to the emergency room and filed an official complaint against Dr. Luke.
The lawsuit between Kesha and Dr. Luke was filed in 2014, in the hope that she could be able to terminate her contract with Sony, Kesha explains that she has been sexually, verbally, and emotionally abused over the past ten years. This suit alleges sexual assault, sexual harassment, gender violence, civil harassment, violation of unfair business laws, infliction of emotional distress (both intentional and negligent) and negligent retention and supervision. Kesha says that she was too afraid to report the abuse earlier because Dr. Luke had control of her life and would threaten to ruin her career. Dr. Luke has so far denied all these claims.
Kesha’s court injunction that was going to allow her to record music while the details of the lawsuit are being hashed. Kesha’s injunction was denied by Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich because she had been given an opportunity to record with Sony and that there has been no showing of irreparable harm so far.
Many other artists have been showing support for Kesha in this difficult time including Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga. Taylor Swift has donated $250,000 to support Kesha financially with her legal troubles. Even though Taylor has donated money, there has been backlash about her not speaking out about the issue on social media.
Sony has said that Kesha is allowed to produce music without working with Dr. Luke, however the revenue from that music would still support Dr. Luke. Additionally, Kesha claims that Dr. Luke was very open with his abuse and was either ignored or encouraged by the other producers, therefore she would not feel comfortable working there.
Kesha’s lawsuit is still ongoing, and there is no estimated time for when the court case will be settled. Hopefully there will be some justice for Kesha soon.

I can’t believe that the court didn’t terminate her contract! Kesha has gone through so much, and I feel so bad that she still has to work with someone who abused her. I hope that the court changes their decision on the case! This article is really informative. Many articles that I have read did not describe the situation very well, but this article did!
