Wrestling

Wrestling season has begun in Madison High School and the players and students are excited about it. Many athletes like Mekhi Crump are going into their senior year looking forward to seeing how it’s going to go. When asked about the team Mekhi stated that it’s “Brotherhood. We end practice on brotherhood and we start practice with our brothers. Walking into their practice this team really does care for each other. The chemistry on this roster has such a strong bond and I can’t see how it can be broken.”

They are coming off a really strong winning season, but they are losing many faces such as AJ WIlson, Michael McGuire, Connor Gilfillan and Indio Pluchino. That is a big loss for Coach Goodwin and his team but incoming seniors like Tommy Packie think otherwise. Tommy said, “We are drilling very hard and trying to get the new freshman a knowledge of wrestling.” Plus, there is still a lot of star power. Senior Anthony Collins, Senior Skyler Pastro  and Junior Jack Mcafrrey are the top names on this roster and have lots of potential this year to make a statement.

You also can’t talk about this team without mentioning Jayson Candelario, Tommy Packie and Carlos Dominquez. These student athletes are the face of this team. They don’t give up. They’re the first ones on the mat and first ones to leave . They talked about their season in the press conference on Dodger Media. Linked below, they talk about their motivation for this season and what makes Madison Wrestling unique.

The Coaching staff on this team is very strong. Head Coach Goodwin, Coach Carrol and Coach Costa have had a very positive influence on their players.”There’s more senior experience and leadership this year”.

This team has lots of underclass power as well. Many of these wrestlers like Sophomore Jay Guaman, Sophomore John Aristizabal are new to the sport, but they have shown massive potential to be leaders going forward. Sophomore Andrew Carreno has been wrestling almost his whole life and it shows. This young wrestler is wrestling kids multiple years older than him and he’s still dominating. “I think my skills show and I am learning from the seniors. I really hope to take the crown from them in the next couple seasons.

Madison is looking to repeat the success they had last year and even improve on it more. If all goes right, Madison hopes to finish first in their division, hoping to  edge out Mountain Lakes and have a winning record. Key players this year include Antohny Collins, Jayson Candelario and Tommy Packie.  Come out and support your Dodgers. They need the hype and the noise from you at their matches; it will mean a lot to them. Their first match is December 17th. Let’s go Dodgers!
