Super Bowl 52: A Historic Night

This past super bowl (LII) pitted the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots against each other in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Both teams and their respective fans were fortunate enough to play and spectate in the event under the protective dome of the U.S. Bank Stadium, considering the outside temperature at kickoff was 2 degrees Farenheit (making it the coldest in Super Bowl history). The Patriots lead by the legendary duo of Brady and Belichick were looking to get a consecutive super bowl victory and their 6th overall in the franchise, while the Eagles were hoping to finally achieve their very first super bowl win and get revenge on the Pats for their heartbreaking loss 13 years ago. At the end of a long, stressful, and exciting night the Philadelphia Eagles managed to outlast Brady and the Patriots and win by a score of 41-33.

Some of the top stories and highlights from the night include:

  • Super Bowl 52 had the most offensive yards of any super bowl in history (1,151 total yards)
  • Tom Brady threw for 505 yards in one game, the most in super bowl history
  • Brady and Belichick also became the player and coach with the most super bowl appearances in history (8)
  • Nick Foles contributed to 4 total touchdowns and won the MVP (being a backup all year to Carson Wentz)
  • Most missed PAT conversions in a super bowl game, both teams (4)
  • Eagles win their first super bowl

While this super bowl was one of the most exciting to date, for many people it was agonizing to watch, as the Eagles and Patriots are two of the most unpopular teams in this area. Jets fans dislike the Patriots because they beat them every year in addition to being a division rival. The Giants harbor bad blood with the Eagles, as they are also long-standing division rivals. In addition, I have found that many people just have an intrinsic hatred of Tom Brady and the Patriots, maybe due to their endless success and super bowl appearances in the past years. For these reasons, many people felt indifferent to the outcome of this super bowl and, for some, this super bowl was almost nightmarish and unbearable to watch. However, for the notoriously rowdy fans and citizens of Philadelphia this was probably one of the greatest nights in recent memories. Having zero super bowls has hung over the Eagles franchise for a very long time. The city of Philadelphia in general is not known to have much success in sports, so this win was a much needed boost for Philly fans and further brought the city together as a whole. The long years of suffering for many Eagles fans has finally seemed to pay off, as they were able to witness the first official super bowl victory for the franchise in their long history.
