The Oscar’s aired on ABC on February 28th, 2016. The Academy Awards are one of the most prestigious awards shows, with a ridiculous amount of celebrities walking the red carpet. The Academy Awards award show seem to be the hub for anyone who is anyone in the movie industry.  Chris Rock hosted the annual awards show. Previous hosts’ include Hugh Jackman, Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres, Seth MacFarlane, Billy Crystal, and co-hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

The Revenant had twelve nominations at the beginning of the night, the movie walked away with only three nominations. The winner of the night was actually Mad Max: Fury Road, walking away with six of their ten nominations. However, Bridge of Spies walked away with the coveted Best Picture award. After four unsuccessful nominations, Leonardo Dicaprio has finally won an Oscar. A collective cheer roared through the country as his name was finally called.

There was a lot of controversy surrounding this year’s 88th annual Academy Awards with stars such as, George Clooney, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lupita Nyong’o, and Mark Ruffalo boycotting the awards show due to the lack of diversity is the acting categories. Chris Rock chose to emphasize this problem, creating an awkward tension between him and the entire audience. Many of the stars seemed to be visibly uncomfortable as the camera showed their reaction to some slightly offensive jokes. The host even tweeted prior to the show saying, “The #Oscars, The White BET Awards”. This is not the first time that a host has made fun of the lack of diversity in the nominations, last year’s host, Neil Patrick Harris, stated that the night was honouring Hollywood’s ‘best and whitest’.

Regardless of all that happened that night and prior, The 88th Academy Awards was full of laughs, uncomfortably watching, clapping, and many more, the night was truly unforgettable.
