MADISON — E-bike restrictions and bans spread throughout New Jersey – with Madison recently joining the long list of towns to already have restrictions on the matter.
The laws regarding e-bikes stem from a multitude of injuries and deaths from riding an e-bike. Due to the shocking increase in fatalities, local laws have been passed in Madison, Summit, Florham Park, and many many more.
While the laws will help create more safety, it isn’t nearly as much as a state wide law that would put extreme restrictions on the use of e-bikes, creating a very safe environment. The bill (S-4834) is currently making its way through legislation.
The bill would require riders to have a valid drivers license or a specific motorized bicycle license, the bike would need to be registered with the MVC and display a registration plate.
The bill is a different extreme for rules and regulations of the use of e-bikes and e-scooters compared to the current state wide law. Right now the state wide law in New Jersey allows a bike or scooter to have a maximum speed of 20 MPH, with those who are 15+ years old being allowed to ride a class 2 throttle.
The current law states that all riders under the age of 17 are required to wear a helmet, plus all areas including bike lanes, roads, and paths are where riding is permitted; sidewalks are also applicable if allowed.
Some actions have been taken on county wide levels, with counties such as Union entirely banning the use of e-bikes and scooters in all parks.
On a more local level, Madison recently passed a local ordinance (Ordinance 42-2025) to focus on making the use of e-bikes and scooters more safe. The ordinance prohibits reckless use of the vehicle and bans the use of sidewalks while riding an e-bike.
All of the laws put in place are a step in the right direction for a safer way to still enjoy e-bikes. Follow along with this topic and more, on Dodger Media.
