Astoundingly, a good portion of Madison High School students don’t know that during the winter, they can participate on the Madison Bowling Team. The past couple years, the bowling team in its entirety has never had much success in obtaining members as the sport has only ever had a varsity squad and around a dozen or so members. Along with not having high participation, the team itself hasn’t been able to hold its own the past few years, ending the 2024-2025 season with a 1-16 record. Being the most unknown varsity team to compete for Madison, let’s go over what we know.
Over the years, the Madison Bowling team has received low numbers of participants, some years having no members at all. A reason behind this is that most people don’t play bowling as a sport they grew up with or would like to try out. That results in people trying out bowling as a first timer and finding success in getting a varsity spot.
Along with low participation rates, the team has had a major turnover after losing a large crop of seniors. Even though the 2024-2025 season didn’t end the way they wanted it to, a group of seniors that had been participating in bowling for Madison for a couple years graduated, forcing a crop of juniors to step up and lead the young team.
On a more positive note, bowling at Madison is a good sport for people to try out for the first time and have fun doing with low performance pressure. They have a home bowling alley at Boonton Lanes in Boonton where they played their first match of the season this past Thursday against Montville and sadly lost 0-7.
Shockingly, the bowling team hasn’t had a strong season since the 2023-2024 season when the team went 6-13 being led by former seniors Jack McGuire and Jack Irwin. In total, Madison bowling has never been able to compete against other opponents as most matches have ended 0-7 for the Dodgers.
Nonetheless, this season could change everything for the bowling Dodgers. With a fresh start of new players joining the team, the Madison bowling team may have a miracle-like season and go farther than they ever have before. We wish the Madison Bowling team the best of luck as they begin their season.
