Vice Principal Mrs. Bosworth has been running Madison Highschools teacher costume competition for 7 years. It all started at Madison Junior School where they would have a costume competition between the teachers and the winners would get a prize. When she came to the high school, she brought the spooky and fun tradition along. Now, the competition is looked forward to every year and has become very popular.
Some go solo, but for the most part, each department chooses a costume theme and competes against the other departments. The students vote for the winner at the end of the school day, and a spooky 3D printed trophy gets awarded to the special winners. Along with the trophy, the lucky winners also get a breakfast the next morning. The science department has won for the past two years, but the history department had a winning streak for a few years prior.
Mr. Abrams, a physics teacher in the science department, said it was a lot of fun to win last year as it gets competitive between the teachers. The science department only started taking the competition two years ago when they were Mario Kart. Some days they would stay at school until 6pm just to finish making their costumes. Abrams says that was his favorite costume, but he enjoys any costume with effort put into it and “Mrs. Bosworth as the wicked witch last year was amazing”.
Bosworth’s love for Halloween has been strong since she was young. Her favorite parts of the holiday are dressing up and eating candy. She loves how it is a fun holiday where you can be creative and express yourself. The day also lets you pretend to be something else for the day. Having the competition at school on Halloween makes the day more fun and memorable for all of the students and staff.
Bosworth hopes the fun contest gives students something to look back on and remember as a fun and enjoyable part of Madison High School. She hopes to continue the competition for as long as she can, and as the other teachers go along with it. Many students say they look forward to the contest every year. Although not many students dress up, they feel like the fun of Halloween is shown through all of the teachers’ costumes.
There is no telling what Bosworth’s costume will be this year, but there is much excitement for the competition and fun.
