Boys Hockey Pre Season 2023

Hockey season is upon us. Under the leadership of captains Tyler Shannon (senior), Kyle Piechnik (junior), John Russen (junior), and Sam Gero (sophomore), they look to return to their winning ways. After moving up a division last season the team went 5-21-1; this year they look to learn from their prior mistakes and rack up more wins.

Watch out for Shannon, Piechnik, Russen, and Gero as they return to the ice and continue making big plays. Last season Shannon had eight goals and seven assists. Piechnik had seven goals and six assists. Russen had two goals and two assists and Gero had nine goals with 13 assists. Another notable returner is junior goalie Bryan Worthington. He ended last season with 217 saves and only allowed 24 goals.

As the season starts to take shape, newcomers Thomas London, Patrick Layng, and Jacob Thompson are all freshmen who should be watched out for on the ice.

When asked about the upcoming season, head coach Joe Cecala said that the biggest challenge will be staying healthy. “We only have one goalie and are not a very deep team, so staying healthy is key.” He also said that his team is “very young and does not have a lot of varsity experience. Some of these guys are playing big minutes for the first time.” Despite all of this, Coach Cecala is confident that his team can band together and win some games. He is very excited for the coming season.

The team opens their season on December 10th at 4:15 against Mount Olive. Some other notable games include one against Morristown on December 16th and against Mendham on January 4th. The rest of their schedule can be found at the link below.
