The Dodgers returned to the ice Thursday night for a highly anticipated early-season test, and the game showed plenty about the identity this group is building. From the opening puck drop, the team played with pace and physicality, setting the tone for what they hope will be a strong season ahead. Despite losing, it was an incredible game and showed the resilience the Dodgers will be bringing to the arena in the future.
The Dodgers, understanding what a hard season laid ahead of them, practiced like no other team. They put the work in constantly, “we prepared through drylands extensively and through film,” said Claeys Machacz. The Seniors are definitely setting the tone this year, Patrick Layng had this to say about their guidance: “We lead by example, our coach always says do the stuff that other people don’t want to do, which sends a good message to the rest of the team.” The Dodgers are not ones to shy away from hard work, and it’s clear their effort in practice is paying off.
During the game, the first line continued to create chances while their defense, noted as an area for improvement, was strong. Goaltending from Nick Worthington anchored the team throughout the night, “As a goalie I have to really shut down on defense and make sure I really play my position,” and play his position he did. Nick blocked a total of 24 incoming shots and kept the score to a meager 6-5. This game was incredibly fast paced with 5 goals combined being scored in only the first period, both teams had their moments and it was hard to tell who was going to come out of the arena with a win.
Players emphasized that the next phase of their season will focus on tightening the lines even further, working on keeping up the stamina, and continuing to show the persistent Dodger spirit. Patrick noted that, “We don’t really give up, it didn’t matter the score, we were always fighting hard.”
Although Thursday’s game against West Morris ended in a loss, it’s without a doubt a stepping point for the Dodgers. Dodgers don’t quit, and we can see that with how the boys left everything on the ice. It was a close game throughout and fans couldn’t be prouder with how the team performed. It’s clear that they have improved in leaps and bounds, and it will be exciting to see what the future holds for them.
