There is no doubt that the Madison Wrestling team is going to surprise some people this year with big changes and a large roster. But one individual sticks out, junior David DeFilippis. David last year finished with a record of 27-10.
Last year David wrestled in the 120 pound, and 113 weight class. DeFilipps has many remarkable wins like his win over Jacob Hughen by Major Decision, 14-2, and a win over Eduardo Bollera by Major Decision, 19-5. As a sophomore he had a total of 9 wins by pins in the 2024-2025 season.
This year David is wrestling in the 126 weight class. DeFilippis and the Dodgers are currently preparing for his first match up against Boonton on Wednesday, December 17th. In previous seasons David has won both his matches against Jacob Hughen from Boonton winning Major Decision 14-2 and Decision 11-4.
David made it to the final round of the 2025 NJSIAA District 9 tournament but lost to Cameron Sontz by Technical Fall, 21-6. He also got third place in the 2025 NJSIAA Region 3 tournament.
David’s dedication to wrestling shows in his off season activities. When there is no wrestling David spends many hours in the gym building strength and conditioning. Film is also an extremely important part of his preparation for the season. David often researches his opponents techniques and finds weaknesses he can use to his advantage during a match.
As a Junior David is a major role model for younger wrestlers on the team. DeFilippis is always encouraging and motivating his teammates to their full potential.
As the season approaches, there is excitement building. The energy is high especially with the big number of students signing up. I recently asked David what he expects from the wrestling team this year, he responded with, “I have high hopes for the team this year, coach Goody has brought in some help with new coaching staff, and the team has record numbers signing up, well over 40 kids.”
Looking ahead, expectations are high for David. With his dedication and support from his coaches. His past performances show a promising future.
