Boys Lacrosse Gets Ready to Face Off

The spring sports season is back in action. And as with every new season, new leaders emerge. For boys lacrosse, those leaders include returning senior team captains: Joey DeMarzo, Ben Colao, Will Clifford, and Anthony Contessa.

During media day, they were all asked by George Cstalos, “How does being a captain make you feel as well as what are your strategies, and how do you keep the team motivated?” Anthony Contessa replied saying, “It’s a great honor to be a captain for any team and to keep pushing, getting better everyday is a great way to stay motivated.”

Helping the young players fit into varsity roles does not come easy, as Joey DeMarzo stated: “It’s an honor being a captain, but we have a very young team with that the leadership role demonstrates being good examples for them.” The new leaders all agree that being role models is important to garner team success.

Although the team may be young, that doesn’t mean there is no potential. All the seniors spoke of just that in reference to their season. They went further to say that they have a responsibility of changing the atmosphere of the team and getting the players to keep an open mind. When all the captains were asked about how they welcomed the new members of the dodger lacrosse family, Ben Coalo strongly stated: “I think a big thing about that is setting a good example. It can be easier not thinking about yourself, but how you carry yourself in practice.” Being a team captain naturally means being a role model.

It’s very clear this group is already improving on their past impressive performances. It’s all about giving help to others. Ben Colao stated that he needs to “keep doing what I’ve been doing and that’s putting in everything I can on and off the field. Everything I have achieved so far is because of trying as much as I physically could in preseason and during the season.” It’s this kind of mentality that will help guide the younger players and improve the Dodgers performances.

The team this season currently stands with a record of 1-1. Look out for outstanding performances by Anthony, Ben, Joey and Will! GO DODGERS!
