Season Round-Up: Girls Tennis

The Madison High School’s girls tennis team had athletes play in singles as well as doubles matches. The players who competed in singles matches were: Marina Gobbi (Jr.), Kaden Peterson (Fr.), and Quinn Cullinan (So.), while the doubles players were: Carly Macrina (So.), Caroline Tracy (Jr.), Ava DeFillipis (Sr.), Ava Fasolas (So.), Maeve Doherty (Jr.), Kate McElvany (Jr.), Anika Sureya (Sr.), and Criseyda Turner (So.). In competition, results for singles and doubles matches are compiled and the school that wins more sets in total wins overall.

With a season spanning from September 8th to October 18, Madison had two big wins and many close matches. There were 7 games that came down to the wire, being within a point of each other. Madison won against Hanover Park 3-2 on September 13th, with Marina Gobbi and Kaden Peterson each winning their singles matches and Ava DeFillipis and Ava Fasolas winning their doubles match. 

On September 24th, Hanover Park was defeated again with a final score of 4-1. Similar to their last game against Hanover Park, Gobbi and Peterson won their singles matches. The doubles teams of Carly Macrina with Caroline Tracy and Maeve Doherty with Ava Fasolas won their matches as well.

On Thursday, September 30th, the Madison Girls Tennis team travelled to Parsippany Hills to participate in the NJSIAA tournament, the finale of the athletes’ whole season. Although the team ended up losing in a close 3-2 finish, Gobbi and Peterson once again won their singles matches, bringing their final records to 8-4 and 7-5, respectively.

Marina Gobbi, when reflecting on the season said, “the season was really tough, although we all played really well. We went to deuce every game and we fought for every point. We had an amazing season overall and we had so much fun.”
