Madison Girls Field Hockey: 2021 Season

Madison Girls Field Hockey: an iconic program that for years has dominated the field, and brought pride and recognition to Madison. During the 2021 season, the girls did not waver in their determination to continue that legacy and have a winning season.

“Our team consisted of mostly underclassmen this year, due to the fact we lost over ten seniors last season,” said junior Sophia Fee. “Because we were a young team, we had to learn each other’s strengths and weaknesses on the field, which was a daunting task.”

Despite the concern over a lack of experience, the girls won their first two games against Morristown Beard and Whippany Park. On a roll, the team went into the rest of their season excited and determined to keep up the good work.

The winning streak fell short after two losses against Ridge and Boonton. “Both the Ridge and the Boonton games were upsetting losses. Boonton was especially tough because Madison had beat them in prior years,” said junior Jenna Powers.

But these losses only made the girls more determined than ever to prove themselves. Practicing from Monday to Saturday for two hours each day, the girls worked tirelessly on their skills.Through conditioning, stick work, and scrimmaging, the girls became more confident in their abilities.

The girls went on to win their next three games against Academy of Saint Elizabeth, Newton, and Mount Olive. After losing two games against Montclair and Randolph, the girls then raked up wins against Pequannock, Morristown, and Parsippany.

“Our winning streak was extremely exciting, but our sights were on our rematch against Boonton,” said junior Chloe Niceberg. “We practiced harder and were more focused than ever for the Boonton game.”

Sadly, the girls lost in a nail-biter 1-0 game. “It was hard for us to lose against Boonton again, but now we have next year to prepare for another rematch,” said junior Sophia Fee.

Ending their season with a 10-6-1 team record, the girls were proud of how much they accomplished. “Especially with a young team, we did really well. Even though we didn’t have a perfect season, we learned to bond as a team and became friends on and off the field,” said sophomore Charlotte Smith. “I am especially excited for next year when we will get to play together again, and we are all familiar with each other’s playing style.”
