Imagine going to see a brand new movie in the theaters that features Hollywood celebrities and suddenly recognizing streets and houses from your own town. The Housemaid is a psychological thriller based off of the 2022 Novel written by Frieda McFadden, and it was filmed in our own backyard!
The movie is filmed primarily at a mansion located on 158 green ave in Madison NJ. The historic estate is a large, early 1900s mansion with an old money appearance. It has a long driveway, light colored exterior, and classic architecture detailing that made it the ideal setting for the wealthy family portrayed in the film. Throughout the filming process, production trucks, camera crews, and cast members could often be seen around town, casting much excitement among local residents.
Other than the Family Stone that was filmed in the 90s, Madison had not met Hollywood until The Housemaid. Thus, Madison citizens and neighboring towns got excited! During filming,
Many Madison citizens who lived near the mansion had the opportunity to meet Hollywood celebrities. Madison High School student Lily Tabish, who lives two houses away from the mansion, saw Sydney Sweeney in February of 2025!
After the release of the movie last December, the Madison mansion became known as “The Housemaid House.” It became famous and people from all over started to visit Madison to go see it. Some visitors took pictures outside of the house, while others explored the downtown area after taking the trip. The movie ultimately contributed to Madison becoming more well known and introduced more people to the wonderful town. Many Madison citizens explain that it is so cool that something so familiar to them has become a landmark for tourists.
The Madison Mansion was the perfect fit for the movie because It perfectly fit the atmosphere of The Housemaid. In the story the Winchester family appears wealthy and successful, and their home plays an important role in creating suspense throughout the film. Aspects of the house including the elegant architecture and secluded atmosphere, help create a sense of mystery for the viewers. The house’s perfect appearance from the outside, teaches that not everything is as it seems…
The success of The Housemaid may have opened the door for more film productions to come to Madison in the future. The town offers beautiful historic homes and scenery. Charming streets, and convenient access to NYC make it appealing for the film industry. Madison’s appearance in The Housemaid, could encourage other producers to consider Madison when choosing the setting of their next film.
