MADISON — Earlier this week in an unusual event, the President of the United States and the American born & Chicago Native Pope got into a heated debate, and all of it was done in the public eye.
The ordeal began on April 7th when Trump took to Truth Social to say “A whole civilization [Iran] will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” After these claims, Pope Leo didn’t waste time before he spoke out.
The Pope told reporters that, “there was this threat against the entire people of Iran,” he went on to make his first critique, saying “this is truly unacceptable”. On the 8th, Leo urged people to, “accompany this moment of delicate diplomacy with prayer.”
Also on the 8th, Leo said the solution is “only by returning to negotiations can the war come to an end”.
The last thing said by the Pope before Trump fired his next shot was during a service saying, “Enough of the display of power! Enough of war! True strength is shown in serving life.” Although not confirmed, the quote is seemingly directed at the U.S./President Trump.
On April 12th, President Trump took to Truth Social again, “[The Pope is] WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.” This excerpt is only a fraction of the full post in which POTUS put the Pope on full blast.
Later on the same day (4/12), Pope Leo told reporters, “I have no fear of the Trump administration, or speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do,” The statement from Leo along with Trump’s very next move is undoubtedly the inferno of the back and forth.
On the 15th, the President once again took to Truth Social, this time posting an AI generated image that depicted himself as Jesus Christ. The image caused large amounts of outrage among American Christians. After facing backlash Trump deleted the image claiming that he ‘thought the image depicted him as a doctor’.
As of the time this article is released, the last move by either of the two came from the Pope, as he took to X (Formerly Twitter) to say, “The masters of war pretend not to know that it takes only a moment to destroy, yet often a lifetime is not enough to rebuild.”
