Generation after generation, citizens of Madison have grabbed their skates and bundled up, preparing for a fun-filled day of skating at Rosedale Skating Pond. The pond, located on Rosedale avenue, is an especially popular destination amongst the community of Madison in the winter months. The rink provides an entertaining and wholesome activity for people of all ages to partake in and enjoy.
To make the skating pond, the Department of Public works (DPW) floods a soccer field every year after soccer season ends and just as hockey season begins. Michael Pellessier, communications director for the borough of Madison, explains that it is a very clever use of the field. The rink boards go up in October of each year and then they get removed that April. This system operates on volunteers that help flood and maintain the ice throughout the season.
According to Lisa DiTuro, a teacher at Madison High School as well as a Madison citizen, “One of the coolest things about living in Madison is the Rosedale Skating Pond. Living right around the corner from an opportunity to skate was a huge selling point for buying our home. It’s an experience that doesn’t exist everywhere and we look forward to skating every year.” It is clear that the people of Madison value Rosedale Skating Pond very much. Dituro also notes that the pond is “just another one of those things that makes Madison such a special place to live.”
The Rink isn’t a new addition to the town of Madison; It has been around for decades. Tom Nielsen, MHS class of 88’, grew up skating at the rink and worked as a skate guard there in his high school years. “It was a great job,” Tom explained. “I got to work with my friends. My work responsibilities were to keep an eye on everyone, clear the ice of snow or sticks, and make sure the fire pit had enough logs in it.” Generations of Madison citizens have enjoyed the rink every winter, and by the looks of it, will continue to enjoy it for years to come. The rink is more than just a place to skate, but a winter gathering spot that brings the community together. The rink has become a familiar part of Madison winters, creating tradition within the community.
