Let’s talk about this year’s Met Gala. The theme was “Costume Art” which corresponded to the theme “Fashion is Art” . Each year the Met Gala takes place as a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The event is organized by vogue and gives the selective list of guests the opportunity to express themselves through fashion and design.
This year, the exhibition was curated by Andrew Bolton, a British museum curator, and focuses on the classical, nude, and often-overlooked body types. The exhibition opens on May 10th to the public and will stay open for several months to be seen.
This year’s co-chairs were Anna Intour, Vogue’s editor in chief, Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams. This was Beyonce’s first Met Gala appearance in a decade, and she appeared with her daughter Blue Ivy. Beyonce’s outfit, custom made by Olivier Rousteing, made a statement as she wore a custom Balmain diamond-encrusted skeleton dress with a matching headpiece featuring a purple feather train.
Starting off the entertainment, Joshua Henry sang a rendition of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”. While Sabrina Carpenter and Stevie Nicks performed later in the night, singing a duet of “Landslide”. The great finale was Madonna singing “Like a Prayer” and a new song titled “Bring Your Love” while wearing a custom Saint Laurent look inspired by surrealist artist Leonora Carrington.
While the night was filled with glamorous looks and fun performances, there were a few controversies that came along with the night. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos were selected as honorary chairs of the 2026 Met Gala, but many people were unhappy with that choice. Protesters stood outside the Museum to highlight the wealth inequality present today. Even Zohran Mamdani, the New York City Mayor, boycotted the event and commented he was focused on affordability, not “star-studded affairs”.
In the end, this year’s Met Gala was a night to remember as celebrities walked down the red carpet in the Northern Italian Garden set. The night concluded with $42 million dollars being raised and donated to the Costume Institute. The theme “Fashion is Art” combined 400 objects with 5,000 years of art featuring the most luxurious and prestigious designers. Concluding the night of fun and fashion, the Metropolitan Museum of Art had another amazing Gala.
