In preparation for award season, the Recording Academy has just announced the Nominees for the 2026 Grammy Awards. Here is a quick review of the biggest and most memorable moments in Grammy history.
Starting off strong, this moment was not only popular in Grammy history, but it actually sparked the creation of Google images, in 2000, JLo wore a revealing green Donatella Versace dress. JLo was attending the award show for her nomination in the category of Best Dance recording with her song “Waiting for Tonight.” She unfortunately did not win the award, but created a global impact with her very revealing and different dress. When people heard about the dress they felt like they had to see it, so they took to Google asking to see a photo of the dress. At the time, Google images did not exist, so Google had to create a platform for people to find images only, so people could find her and her dress.
But before JLo, Michael Jackosn was changing the world on February 28, 1984 when he won a record 8 Grammys in one night. During the 26th annual Grammys, Michael Jackson was nominated for 9 awards and was Honored for the Award of Merit. All of these nominations were for his album “Thriller,” which is still the most sold album of all time. These wins changed the way the world viewed him because even after his first big solo album, “Off the Wall.” he was still viewed as just the little boy from the Jackson 5. This also broke down color barriers as he was only the second African American artist to win the Grammy for Album of the Year.
More recently in 2011, Lady Gaga showed up to the Awards show in a giant egg being carried by her performers. When attending the 54th Grammy awards, Gaga prepared for her performance by staying in her temperature controlled egg for 3 full days before the award show even happened. She didn’t emerge from this vessel until her performance of her acclaimed song “Born this Way” off of her album “Born this Way,” for which she won Album of the Year.
These events are just a few of the many moments that have made the Grammys what they are today. With 16.9 million views this past year, the Grammys show no sign of stopping any time soon and the world is ready to see who will take home the coveted golden gramophones this year.
