Started in 1927, the Oscars are a prestigious award ceremony that honors those in the entertainment industry for their work. This year, the Oscars will be taking place on March 27th, where there will be a plethora of categories up for grabs. Some of these categories include the best sound, best costume design, best actor, best actress, and many other categories, including best animated film.  While it isn’t always the most highly anticipated category,  the amount of work and people that go into creating animated films, make them an even bigger feat.  Let’s take a look at this year’s nominees.

There have been five films nominated for this award: Luca, The Mitchells vs The Machines, Encanto, Raya and The Last Dragon, and Flee. Let’s take a look and give each of these films a quick spotlight! 

The Mitchells vs The Machines is a comedy/sci-fi film, where our main character, Katie Mitchell, decides to go on a road trip in hopes of finding success in film school. However, nothing goes to plan and she finds herself in a position to have to save the planet. You can find this movie on Netflix. 

Raya and the Last Dragon is an adventure film that takes place in the world of Kumandara, where humans and dragons live together. They must defend themselves against a new species of monster. Watch this battle go down now on Disney+!

Luca is a comedy film. Taken place in a seaside town in Italy. Luca discovers that there is much more to live then his world under the sea. After meeting Roberto, a sea-creature who visits the human world, they try to live amongst the humans and hide the fact that they are highly endangered sea creatures. To splash right into the fun, you can catch this film on Disney+ today! 

Flee is a documentary that goes through the struggles of a gay couple in Denmark. When secrets from the past are revealed, they find their relationship in a place that it was never in before.  Catch this PG-13 rated film on Hulu today. 

Finally, we have Encanto. The only musical of the group! The Madrigal family is filled with magical talents. Each member of the family has been blessed with a power, that is, except for the main character, Mirabel. Their fate turns to her when they discover that the magic of the Encanto is in danger. To see how this turns out for them, find this movie on Disney+!
