A group of sophomore boys are finally forming a ping pong club at Madison High School after months of planning. Many of them have wanted to create such a club at MHS after learning last year’s seniors had one, but were not going to continue it.

“We had the idea back in 8th grade when we were bored” says 10th grader Ethan Greene, an integral member of the group, “but a bunch of us decided to actually go ahead with it back in the spring.” Ethan was asked who the group wanted to be the teacher sponsor. They decided that Coach Radzieski was the best choice, and he enthusiastically agreed, reportedly saying it was a great idea.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing ping pong,” Coach Radzieski says, “so I thought if we can set something up for once or twice a week during common lunch, that it would be a nice opportunity for some of our students to do something active during lunch”

When asked about the challenges that face the club, such as locating a proper table, Coach Radzieski is optimistic. “I think that within the Madison community alone, we could probably find a couple of tables to be donated for the duration of the club.” He cites finding a place to actually play and store the table as being one of the more difficult obstacles to overcome.

The boys set up a petition for students interested in joining at the beginning of the year. The petition currently has eighteen signatures and is always looking for more. The coalition of possible ping-pongers are in the final stages of planning, and look to submit the petition to Mr. Drexel, the vice-principal, as soon as possible.

“Anyone is welcome,” Ethan says excitedly,  “if they are looking to improve their sportsmanship, increase hand-eye coordination, or look into playing a good ol’ fashioned game of ping pong, then they are encouraged to join.”
