MHS “Cheerleaders” and Seniors

*MDO apologizes for a factual inaccuracy in this article.  The article has been revised.

This past week, the students of MHS showed that they have a lot of school spirit. When students came into school this past Monday they immediately saw the majority of the school’s hallways decked out in maroon and gold decorations. In addition to the decorations, students and faculty of MHS were encouraged to dress up for different themes for each day of the week. Monday was pajama day, Tuesday was tacky tourist day, Wednesday was hunt or be hunted (students and faculty were told to dress up as an animal or a hunter), Thursday was USA day, and Friday was to wear school colors maroon and gold. All of this school spirit was leading up to the pep rally Friday afternoon.

The pep rally took place in the gym and at the end of the day after classes. When students walked into the gym, they were greeted by cheerleaders and loud music from the school’s marching band. Students then took a seat in the assigned part of the bleachers with the rest of their class. To start the pep rally off athletic director Sean Dowling talked briefly about the fall sports this season and about upcoming sporting activities such as the football game that night. Afterwards, the captains of the fall sports came to the center of the gym and talked about their seasons so far and upcoming competitions. The fall sports at MHS are boys and girls soccer, field hockey, football, girls tennis, volleyball, and cross country.

Next was the tug of war competition between the different classes and faculty. Students eagerly cheered on their class’s team, while Coach Lynott officiated the competition and announced the winner. The senior class won the competition this year.  After the tug of war, students had a break listening to the marching band play before the next competition of the three legged race. The three legged race picked two teams for each class,  and all of the pairs happened to be exes. During the competition the teams had to run to one side of the gym, sit on a balloon to pop it, and then run back to the other side of the gym. Many of the contestants could be seen laughing and tripping over each other throughout the race. Afterwards the students were dismissed from the gym to go home.

The pep rally would not have been possible without the amazing students and faculty of MHS. Go Dodgers!
