Girls’ Varsity Basketball’s Seniors.

As the winter season of MHS sports comes to a close, it is necessary to have an overview to talk about the success of many of the teams. The successes spanned from the hockey team winning the Haas Cup for the first time in MHS history, to senior Helene Rowland qualifying for the Meet of the Champions for the third in her high school career due to her talents in shot put.

Girls’ Basketball made great strides this year. With the largest group of seniors in Girl’s Basketball in a couple years, the team was led by both senior captains Gaby Fuchs and Gabby Conmy but also all seven seniors collectively. Senior Gaby Fuchs commented, “This year we really bonded as a team which is why I think we had so much success…this year we played as a unit and for each other.” With a current record of 12 wins and 9 losses, the Lady Dodgers proved their talent against very competitive teams such as Villa Walsh and Morristown Beard. As they are ranked 3rd in their division, the girls look forward to an exciting round of states next week.

Boys’ Basketball’s record of 2-18 does not represent the hard work and determination that was evident throughout the whole season. Led by seniors Kevin Armstrong and Casey Weiss, the team competed with great sportsmanship and positive attitudes on and off the court in a very tough conference. Santi Quintero stood out as well as a freshman on varsity and a talented player with a great shot.

After losing very talented and fast runners from 2014’s graduating class, the MHS Winter Track and Field teams still had a great season. This season, the girl’s team placed 11th at state sectionals and the boys track team placed 4th. With a great number of teams competing in sectionals, these places represent great success for Madison in a very competitive Northern Jersey Winter Track and Field league. Again, with a very talented group of senior runners, the team looks forward to the spring season to continue their efforts.

Wrestling ends their season with a record of 6-14. Led by a strong group of six seniors, the team showed the school that Madison wrestling can be successful now and in the future. Although their record was not exactly what they aimed for in the beginning of the season, the group’s bond will be what the team will remember about this season.

The 2014-2015 Ice Hockey season will be a year to remember. Led by senior captains Harrison Meyer, Kyle Midlige, and Jake Nittolo, the team has achieved the best record in the state with a record of 27-1. Now competing in states, this is the farthest the hockey team has ever gone in MHS history. After a huge upset against Cranford on Wednesday with an overtime goal, the Dodgers have proved that a small school can go against the odds and there is no limit to their success.

Best of luck to the Winter sports teams as they finish their seasons. Let’s get ready for Spring!
