A Glyphs magazine from days of ‘ole.

With the Glyphs Coffeehouse fast approaching many Madison High School students wanted to learn about it. Madison Dodger Online (MDO) was privileged enough to sit down with the prestigious Glyphs editor, Audrey Rowland (AR), who graciously allowed MDO to take time away from reading Glyphs submissions.

MDO: When is the next Glyphs Coffeehouse?

AR: The next Glyphs coffeehouse is this Friday! It’s from 7 to 10. There’s no pressure to stay the whole time, but most people who come end up staying.

MDO: Where is it?

AR: It’s at Short Stories, which is a new bookstore that just opened in Madison after a Kickstarter campaign. The store is at 32 Main Street, right next to Alfred’s.

MDO: What can an audience member expect from the night?

AR: Glyphs! They can look forward to amazing performances and readings by Madison students. There are a lot of really talented people at Madison, and the coffeehouse is a great way to showcase everything that we can do, from dramatically reading song lyrics to actually singing and playing the guitar to reading poetry. Friday will be a great day to be a Dodger.

MDO: Are non-Glyphs members welcome?

AR: Yes, totally! Anyone who wants to can and should go to the coffeehouse. The more people, the better! Coffeehouses are really about appreciating how talented everyone is, socializing, and eating a lot of food.

MDO: What is the difference between the last coffeehouse and this upcoming one?

AR: There’s not much difference! They’re both at Short Stories, and there’s going to be a ton of food at this Friday’s coffeehouse, like there was at the last one. The one big difference is that there is going to be an Open Mic this Friday, which means that you have a chance to perform even if you didn’t sign up ahead of time.

MDO: What can be “performed” at the Coffeehouse?

AR: Almost anything. A lot of people sing, and sometimes they back themselves up on guitar, like Will Wraith did at the last coffeehouse. It’s also popular for a few people to sing together. Carrie Klein and Emily Fritze sang “Iscariot,” by Walk the Moon last time, and it sounded really good. People also read poetry, or beatbox, or really do anything.

MDO: Any hints to who may be performing?

AR: There have been rumors that Ms. Bergen will perform, but I cannot confirm those/I have not convinced her to perform yet. Some other local celebrities that are performing are Suji Balfe and Doug Witte and the Jazzy Three. Friday will really be a great day to be a Dodger.

MDO: Where can someone sign up to perform?

AR: The list to sign up ahead of time is actually full! We limited the amount of spaces available before hand to make sure that there would be time for the Open Mic; last time, so many people signed up to perform, there wasn’t time to have the Open Mic, so we wanted to make sure that was an option this time. Anyone who wants to can still perform during Open Mic, after the scheduled performances.

MDO: Anything else you’d like to add?

AR: Submit to Glyphs.

Poetry, prose, and artwork (including photos).

Do it and you’re cool.
