Celebrating the win.

On February 20th at 5:45pm, Madison versed Jefferson for the Haas Cup. With only one loss so far this season, Dodger Hockey took home the cup. Jefferson had the first two goals but by the end of the 1st period the score was tied 2-2 with the first goal by Jack DeBoer (freshman) and the second by Captain Harrison Meyer (senior). At the end of the second period, the score was 5-2 with goals by Jack DeBoer, Will Scavone, and Kyle Midlige. Then the last goal, to finish the game of 6-2 was again, by Jack DeBoer.

This was Madison’s first Haas Cup ever. There was great anticipation for the game by the fans, coaches and, of course, the players, who came out of the game prouder than ever. Kyle Midlige, senior and captain said, “Winning the Haas has been something that Madison has been striving for in the last couple of years. This season shows how far the program has come and winning the cup will be something the rest of my team and I will never forget.” There were four seniors who carried their team this year; Kyle Midlige, Harrison Meyer, Chris Rogers and Jake Nittolo played for their first and last Haas Cup this past Friday. Having been something they have been working on for so long and finally achieving it their last year at MHS and getting Madison’s first Haas Cup has been such a great accomplishment for them.

Junior Jared Finnerty finished this game with a gash above his left eye, leaving him with a souvenir of 9 stitches! Junior Joey Goret unfortunately couldn’t even play because of his broken ankle, but of course he was on the sidelines cheering his team on. The Dodgers couldn’t have done it without Kavi Sinah (sophomore) who only let 2 goals in out of several attempts made by Jefferson. Harrison Meyer noted, “What I think really factored into our success this season was the fact that we were a true team. We weren’t reliant on individuals and that’s what made the ultimate difference. Everyone had their own role and everyone worked as hard as they could to fulfill it.”

Jefferson was not an easy team to beat, but because of our teams hard work this season, it finally paid off and they can finally call themselves the Haas Cup Champions, which was well deserved. Next stop, State Championships…Good luck boys!
