The Field Hockey team has been having an amazing season so far with an overall record of 18-1. The team started off the long weekend with a 4-0 victory against Hackettstown on Wednesday, November 5th. The team then trained hard on Thursday and Friday for their State Sectional Championship against West Essex. West Essex was seeded first and Madison second, but no one payed attention to that on the field, as both teams were equally matched.
West Essex started off with a bang, scoring within the first few minutes of the game. Madison quickly scored, tying it up. Unfortunately, at the half, West Essex was leading 2-1. The Lady Dodgers fired back with three goals, putting them in the lead at 4-2. West Essex recounted with two more goals, making it another tie game. The game then ended at a nail biting 4-4. Both teams prepared for overtime.
Last time that Madison played overtime was against Oak Knoll, Madison’s only loss this season. This time, however, the Lady Dodgers persevered through an entire set of overtime, complete with many amazing saves from keeper Emilie Flamme. As the second set of overtime started, the crowd’s energy was building. With about 7 minutes left in overtime Madison was awarded a corner. Corners are where a ball is “inserted” (sent) from the endline and sent to a player on the circle who then tries to score. Junior Kaitlyn Dasilva inserted the ball to freshman Elizabeth Romano, who took the game winning shot that went in. The entire Madison section of the fans erupted in cheers.
Junior Stephanie Dellavia and freshman Elizabeth Romano both had two goals and one assist. Junior Kaitlyn Dasilva had one goal and two assists. Junior Caroline Turnbull also had one assist. Junior Emilie Flamme had an amazing game with 11 saves. Come support the Field Hockey team as they compete in the Group 2 Semifinal against Summit on Wednesday November 12th at Boonton High School.
