As homecoming week approaches, most students at MHS will see many of their friends from different schools posting Homecoming and Semi photos on various social networking sites. We envy them, complaining about how our school is “so lame” for not hosting dances.
Only a select few seniors remember the old homecoming dances. Their popularity declined over the years along with the school spirit that MHS is now struggling to restore. Senior Maddie Dunn recalls the last MHS Halloween themed Homecoming her freshman year. “All the soccer girls had to go,” she said, “I think the Student Council lost 2,000 dollars on it.” After this last school dance, students can see why the Student Council is hesitant to organize another Homecoming.
Still, the movement for a school dance is gathering momentum. The students that were “too cool” to go to the old school dances have now graduated. The ingredients may be right to give school dances another try. How many people would like to see the tradition of homecoming return?
