After starting off the season strong in conference play with a record of 7-0-1, the Madison girls soccer team prepares to head into the Morris County Tournament this year. Last year, the team made it all the way to the final round in an impressive underdog run before unfortunately losing to Chatham. The Dodgers get a bye week in the first round due to their seeding in which they came in fourth. Morris Knolls claimed the number one seed, followed by Randolph and West Morris Central, at 1, 2, and 3.
The team has a tough way to go this year facing teams like Morris Knolls, Chatham, and Hanover Park on their way to the finals. Senior captain Kate Reigle commented on this year’s upcoming journey, “I definitely think this year will be a bit harder, but I think we’ve been doing a good job all season preparing for the county tournament, so hopefully we’ll just continue the winning streak”. Kate, who’s on her fourth year with the team, knows that they can and will be able to finish off what they started last season.
Last year was not only a historic season for Madison girls soccer in general but it was also the first time they ever made a county final. Even though they lost in a heartbreaking game against Chatham in the end, they still made school history. Madison is the heavy favorite against thirteenth seeded Pequannock in their first game, who beat Jefferson in the first round. If they win they will likely play Chatham in the quarter finals. When senior captain Anna Gominiak was asked about playing Chatham she stated that, “Chatham was really good last year, and I feel like we didn’t play like ourselves in the game, so playing together as a team is going to help us potentially win this year.” Anna, and the team as a whole, feel confident and hopeful preparing for this big game. If the team manages to play as a team and maintain their playing style from the rest of the season, they will be a very even match for this Chatham team or any other team they meet.
As they head into county’s, they are determined and prepared to take on anything that is thrown at them, continuing their winning streak and bringing home the championship for the first time in school history. Good luck Dodgers!
