Pope Franics (the 266th Catholic Pope) is in Critical Condition at Rome’s Gemelli hospital in Italy. He is currently battling bronchitis, pneumonia in both lungs and minor kidney failure.
Pope Franics, whose original name is “Jorge Mario Bergoglio,” was administered to the hospital in Rome on February 14th for a case of bronchitis. After being in stable condition, he shortly fell ill after suffering a polymicrobial infection. Shortly after that, the Vatican announced that the Pope had developed Pneumonia in both lungs and was in critical condition.
This was especially concerning as the Pope has only one functioning lung; the other was removed as a young adult. The mortality rate for those above the age of 85 who contract pneumonia in both lungs is 60% . With the Pope only having one functioning lung, the mortality rate in his case is much higher.
On Saturday (February 22nd) the Pope continued to get worse and was diagnosed with thrombocytopenia, a condition that causes blood clots to form due to low counts of platelets in the bloodstream. He was also put on supplemental oxygen after experiencing an “asthma-like respiratory crisis.”
The Pope had previously been hospitalized in recent years due to his worsening health conditions. In June 2023, he underwent hernia surgery and in March of that same year, for another episode of his worsening case of bronchitis.
On Tuesday, the Vatican has announced that the Pope’s condition has somewhat stabilized and results showed that his mild kidney failure has not prompted any new fresh concerns. They continue to mention that the Pope is in good spirits and has resumed his work duties.
We from Dodger Media wish the Pope the best wishes in fighting and returning healthy to his normal working duties as soon as possible.
