Last week I found myself standing at the Ted Monica Stadium at 9pm on a Wednesday. I watched the Marching Dodgers rehearse. What struck me first was not the trumpets, drums, or flutes but it was a voice that projected from the top of the bleachers all the way to the turf. That voice belonged to Mr Batch, the band director, who guided every move and called out instructions with many compliments and encouragement.
There was something very different about this sports practice compared to the others. It was a late night practice and recently I learned why. Many years ago a lot of the football players wanted to join the marching band but they were unable to attend the practices because it interfered with their football schedule, so this schedule was built so they could go to practice and march after. Which shows how much the whole program cares about each individual.
From the sidelines that night I could see a very happy community, it almost seemed like everyone was friends and goofing around but at the same time I could feel the seriousness and dedication. This year’s 2025 show “The Witchwood Woods” is complex and layered, but I am very excited to see how they develop this theme. I did get to listen to them at a recent football game and was highly impressed with their skill. After looking at the marching band calendar i saw that they have a competition on October 18, 2025 at Metlife stadium, which they also attended last year and won best percussion. Best of luck to the Marching Dodgers this season!! We are looking forward to following you guys along on this year’s journey.
