On February 22nd, Gavin Randall scored the 1000th point of his high school basketball career. This puts him on pace to become the leading scorer in MHS boys basketball history.
He achieved this mark at Newark Tech, where the Dodgers fell 53 to 55. Randall has been playing varsity basketball since his freshman year. In his first year, he played in 24 games and scored a total of 141 points. His sophomore year saw a massive improvement. Randall scored 356 total points in 29 games. In his junior year, which has not yet finished, Randall has scored 534 points so far, in the 26 games he has played.
Randall’s averages have improved each year. As a freshman, he averaged 5.875 points per game, whereas in his sophomore year, he averaged 12.276 points per game. His biggest jump came during his junior year, where he currently averages more than his past two seasons combined at 20.538 points per game.
Randall’s career average is 13.051 points per game. Randall has made a total of 228 2-point field goals, 146 3-point field goals and 137 free throws. In his three years as a high school basketball player, Randall has been on a winning team for each of them. Randall has grown into his role as a leader, and spends time helping the younger players.
When I asked how Randall has transformed into a leader his teammate Callum Regan had this to say “Gavin has shown his leadership on and off the court, and has really pushed me and the rest of the team to be the best versions of ourselves.” Randall has grown a lot as a player and as a leader during the course of his highschool basketball career only time will tell what more he can contribute to the team in his fifth and final year.
