Tommy DeVito is back in the hot seat after the Giants announced their decision to bench Daniel Jones and start Tommy DeVito. Fans have not been happy with the Giants performance this year with their record being 2-8, and it is clear the managing staff feels the same way. On Monday, November 18th Head coach Brian Daboll announced that they would be benching Daniel Jones and starting Tommy DeVito.
In the six seasons that Daniel Jones has had with the Giants, his performance was less than desired. In Jones’ first year on the Giants he had a solid number of passing yards, that number being 3,027, but that number has only gone down in subsequent seasons. Daniel Jones ended his first season with a record of 3-9, whereas Tommy DeVito ended his first season with a record of 4-5. DeVito played less games than Jones and left a much stronger impression on fans than Jones ever had. In his first season, Jones had a completion percentage of 61.9 whereas DeVito had a completion percentage of 64.0.
In Jones’s first season, he had a total of 3,027 passing yards, but DeVito only had 1,101, even accounting for the three less games DeVito played, Jones still greatly outperforms him. In his first year, Jones had a total of 284 completions, while DeVito only had 114, Jones more than doubled DeVito in this area. In his first year, Daniel Jones had 24 passing touchdowns and Tommy DeVito only had 8. Jones triplets DeVito here as well, proving that according to stats, Jones is the superior player by far.
On Sunday 11/24, the Giants played the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, this was also Tommy DeVito’s first game this season. The Giants lost this game 30 – 7, showing the fans that Tommy DeVito isn’t necessarily a better fit to play quarterback than Daniel Jones.
From the start of the game it was clear that Tommy DeVito was only chosen over second string quarterback Drew Lock to appeal to the fans. Tommy DeVito was never intended to be a full time replacement for Daniel Jones, but it is a questionable choice to keep him as the starter for the rest of the season over Drew Lock.
