The Madison High School Boys Varsity Soccer team has had an extremely successful season this fall. The team has exemplified a united front which has ultimately led to their undefeated title. Under the leadership of Coach Vazquez, the boys have worked and played tirelessly, putting in positive energy every day on the field.
With the team’s undefeated record, it has fostered memorable moments. Several members of the team have reflected on the game against their rival school, Chatham. Coach Vazquez says, “The hardest game this season so far would be against Chatham, who is a rival because we are neighboring towns, so there is always a lot of pride”. This game was momentous and symbolized the strong grit and teamwork of the Madison boy’s soccer team.
Players like senior Matthew Munoz have made a huge impact this season. Fellow teammate junior Guilherme Santos says, “his precise finishing behind the net has won us many games. His ability to hold up the ball as a striker has also tremendously helped our team.” In addition, junior Callum Reagan, the team’s goalie, has had several saves and was a key component to the team’s winning streak. Coach Vazques praises, “Cal Reagan’s first varsity shout out and Gui’s and Santi’s assists.”
It is no secret that these boys are talented, but what’s their secret? Each player goes into each practice and each game with the same mentality: “every game is like our first game,” says junior Andrew Haviland. The key to these boy’s success is their confidence and positive mindset—in each game, 100% of their efforts are put in.
The members of the team emphasize the family-like bond that has created personal friendships and ties. Guilherme describes their bond as if they “were brothers who just so happen to play on the same team.” This unique aspect lead to the outstanding statistics of winning by over 2 points per game on average. The most noticeable example includes the game against Mountain Lakes High School, with a winning score of 6 to 1.
It is safe to say that Madison High School has lots of pride when it comes to our fall sports. The soccer team has put in dedication and sportsmanship in their performance this season, which has inspired not only the younger athletes, but also students and parents. As the season continues, the boys hope to beat Delbarton in the county finals on Saturday, October 26th.
