On Tuesday afternoon, 14 seconds into the game, Charlotte Tuhy became the second female in the history of Madison High School to score 1000 pts. After winning the tip, Charlotte hit a foul line jumper off an assist from senior teammate, Katherine Finnegan. Charlotte went on to score 26 points in the game, leading the Madison Dodgers to a 62-24 victory over Morristown Beard. Senior, Beau Braverman, had 19 points in the effort.
Tuhy is the first female Dodger to hit this milestone since Liz Remus, also known as the Franchise, did it in 1997. Remus totalled 1792 points in her career. Charlotte, only a junior, scored 396 points as a freshman and 563 as a sophomore, setting a single season school record. On the court alongside her is junior Gabby Mariani, who set a record herself last season. Mariani holds the school career assist record, currently sitting at 278. She tallied 147 last season. The two together have proven a powerful team.
And it is teamwork, according to Tuhy, that has helped her reach this goal. When asked how she felt about the upcoming milestone, she said, “It’s just another game, being with my teammates and working toward getting better and winning,” Tuhy said. “It’s not all about the number. It’s about being able to win.”
Her coach, Lisa DiTuro stated, “Charlotte is an incredibly special player. She is versatile and such a difficult match-up. She can score from inside and out. Charlotte is a prolific scorer for sure, but she is a team-first player. She cares deeply about our success as a unit and always puts the team over individual accolades. She has been wonderful to coach.”
She has also been joined in the backcourt throughout her career by another scoring threat, Beau Braverman, who adds a lot of firepower to this unit. Combined with Gabby Mariani’s passing acumin, it’s a very strong backcourt. When asked how she felt about the milestone Mariani said, “It was awesome to see one of my childhood friends achieve their childhood dreams. She deserves this, and I can’t wait to see what she does in the future.”
Charlotte’s future may include playing college basketball or even college softball. Either way, Charlotte is a dedicated athlete, and this is the first of many achievements in her athletic career.
