The second ever PowderPuff flag football game at Madison High School concluded with a 6-0 victory for the seniors. Let’s take you through each drive of the game.
To open the game, the juniors start with the ball, crowd screaming and excitement building. On the first play, the senior defense gets home and makes a sack for a 4-yard loss. Fortunately for the juniors, on the next play, they complete a 10 yard pass downfield, but that would be the only good thing to come out of that drive, as the next two plays ending in incomplete passes.
With the juniors turning the ball over, the senior team gets to show the talent they have on the offensive side of the ball starting from just 30 yards from the goal line. For the first play, from scrimmage, the seniors run the ball with a jet sweep to Ellison Errington for a gain of 10 yards and pick up a first down. With a new set of downs, the seniors decide to run the ball to the other side with Laurene Creatue taking the handoff, resulting in a gain of 3 yards. The seniors try to run another jet sweep but are stopped with a limited gain on second down. With thier third down, the seniors air it out to Ashley Driscoll who picks up a 7 yard gain. The seniors have the ball at the 5 yard line with a 4th and goal but are stopped at the 1 yard line.
The juniors backed up on their own 6-yard line, start this drive out strong, but unfortunately an offsides call brings them back up to their own 1. The next play it is obvious that the seniors are bringing a blitz, but the blitz fails and the juniors get a 20 yard run downfield giving them breathing room and more. This breathing room didn’t do much, as the juniors then went on to throw 2 incompletions and one 3 yard pass which was not enough to gain the first down. Senior Ball.
On first down the seniors throw a screen pass for a loss of yardage. On second down the seniors try a reverse but are fumbled resulting in a dead ball. With a third down the senior ran a sucker for a large gain down the right sideline. With limited yards to a first down, the seniors run a dive up the middle and pick up the first down. On first down the seniors run a jet sweep again for a massive gain. The next play the seniors ran the same play for another gain. The seniors attempted that one more time but the juniors were on it, stopping it for no gain. The seniors then attempt a dive, but the junior defensive line is all over it. 4th down, the seniors neeed to score and they go back to the sweep, which is ran into the endzone- TOUCHDOWN! The whole senior sideline runs onto the field in celebration receiving a penalty.
After a penalty on the celebration from the touchdown, the juniors get the ball with great field position. They start the drive with a run that goes nowhere and an incomplete pass. Then, on the next play they throw a slant that breaks loose and gets them within 25 yards of the goal line. Their first two plays end up with incomplete passes, but on 3rd down the junior quarterback runs all the way down to the 12 yard line and picks up a first down. This is a crucial drive for both teams, as a score ties it and a stop keeps the seniors up going into halftime. On the ensuing play, the senior gets an interception, shifting the momentum of the game out of the hands of the juniors.
The seniors go into halftime with a lead and all the momentum.
The seniors start the half off with a jet swipe to their own sideline for about a 10-yard gain. Next the seniors run the same play to the other side and are stopped at the line of scrimmage, followed by a run to Laurene for a gain of several yards. The seniors got sneaky on the next play and went on second go, drawing the defense offsides for a first down. The seniors go in a wildcat formation with Katherine Finnegan in the backfield; it’s a direct snap for no gain.
After that big momentum swing, the juniors take over with the ball. They open with a long qb scramble gaining 30 yards, and things start looking good for them. Unfortunately, that luck did not continue when on the next play, the seniors blitzed and got pressure causing the quarterback to lob up a bad pass that was intercepted by the seniors.
The seniors start their drive off with their bread and butter, the jet sweep, which goes for 10 yards. You guessed it, the next play is a jet sweep again that gains even more yards, and the Seniors are in scoring range. Unfortunately the Seniors take away their own momentum by getting three flags called on them on this drive, which puts them out of scoring range and lead to a desperation pass that is intercepted by the juniors.
Another big stop, the juniors need to capitalize. The drive starts out with a run that goes nowhere, and the senior seems to be holding up. The next play is an incomplete pass but a flag flies in, giving the juniors hope. Fortunately for the seniors the defense holds up and shuts down every play and the juniors are held to another 4 and out.
The Seniors take over on the juniors 20 yard line, they are looking to put the game away and score. The drive starts out strong with another jett sweep for 10 yards, which gets them down to the 10. The junior defense may bend, but it does not break as they hold the serious offense out of the endzone, and give their offense the ball black with around a minute.
The juniors get the ball with almost the whole field to go, this drive is for the game. They open up with a solid 10 yard run that gets the drive going. That moment could not build though as the senior defense comes up big with a sack on the very next play. The Juniors fight back and gain 15 yards on the next play keeping the drive alive. That play is followed by an incomplete pass, then another 10 yard gain- the juniors are driving now! But the drive halts on the next play when the Seniors force the first of 3 incomplete passes. The pressure on both teams is mounting; if the juniors don’t get the first down the game is over. This is the biggest 4th down all game. Juniors snap the ball and all the receivers are covered, so the quarterback takes off, but is taken down right before the first down.
Senior ball and the game is over.
The seniors take a knee and the crowd goes wild. The Seniors get their revenge from last year’s loss and come out the champions of the second every Powderpuff at Madison High School.
Both teams fought hard, but in the end, the game was decided by a few crucial plays. Both teams were in the redzone many times, but factors like turnovers and penalties proved difficult for both teams.
