Throughout the 2025 Madison Community Pool season, many employees spoke out about not being adequately paid for their hours worked. All employees received word at the end of the summer that payments would be delayed due to the payroll administrator having an unexpected medical emergency. After receiving no other communication nor compensation from the pool board in September, employees and Madison families began to reach out to the Borough for help.
Though the Madison Community Pool is a privately owned nonprofit, the Borough agreed to assist with the situation, holding a Borough Council meeting on Wednesday September 24 to decide their next steps. The council concluded in this meeting that they would take action to cover the rest of the wages owed. This led the Borough to distribute a total of $225,000 to the underpaid employees during the week of Monday September 29.
As of now the pool is being investigated by the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development under alleged violations of “statutes and regulations under the purview of the Division of Wage and Hour Compliance,” according to the Madison Eagle. The Madison Borough, however, hopes to work with the community pool board to solve their lasting issues. The goal of all involved is to have the pool reopened for the 2026 season as it remains a major employer of the community’s high school and college students and has been a center for Madison families to gather for over 50 summers.
