The Morris County Vocational School of Technology Academy of Government and Leadership students went on a trip to Washington DC to visit various landmarks connected to the curriculum of the program. They visited the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, White House, Congress, National Archives, Smithsonian National Museum of American History, and more. The group spoke to various tour guides and got a first hand experience on how the American government system functions, as well as visiting monumental places of the nation’s founding figures. Next, I interviewed three junior students who went on the trip to see what their favorite part of the trip was: Aileen Colarusso said she really enjoyed seeing the original Star-Spangled Banner at the Smithsonian Museum, as well as Abraham Lincoln’s iconic top hat. Student Karl Maurer responded that visiting Congress was his favorite activity. Madelyn Shanley loved the Lincoln Memorial and the hidden Martin Luther King Jr. quote on the memorial. Overall, the trip was a wonderful educational experience that the students enjoyed, and the Madison district hopes to be able to continue this opportunity for future students.
