Madison, NJ, a charming town with a rich history, is home to several restaurants offering delightful wings.
54 Main Main Bar & Grille
Nestled in downtown Madison, just a block from the train station, 54 Main Bar & Grille stands as a premier family restaurant and late-night hotspot. While 54 Main Bar & Grille is known for its buffalo wings, the skin was overly crispy and slightly burnt, overshadowing the chicken. The spice level was tolerable, and the flavor was decent, but the extended wait of up to 17 minutes and the higher cost of $15 for 10 wings were drawbacks.
Prospect Tavern
Stepping into Prospect Tavern is a journey back to the late 19th century. Housed in an 1880s Tudor building that once served as the bustling railroad industry, this tavern offers buffalo wings for $14. Similar to 54 Main, Prospect Tavern’s wings had a bit too crispy skin, but the spice level was notable, leaving a pleastant heat after each bite. The chicken flavor was comparable to 54 Main, with more meat on some wings. The wait time of 6-7 time and a total cost of $14 for 8 wings were reasonable.
Bottle Hill Tavern
The story of the Honey Buffalo Wings at Bottle Hill Tavern transcends flavors, echoing tales from the early 1700s. Originally constructed in 1812 and later saved from demolition in 1923, the tavern’s rich history includes a visit from the Marquis de Lafayette. Today, the Horn, Haralampoudis, Fleming, and Horsey families uphold the legacy, celebrating Madison’s history with each delectable bite. Priced at $12, these stood out with superior wings and the best sauce. Despite being the least spicy, it had the most flavor, allowing the chicken taste to shine. Additionally, it was the fastest to be served in under 5 minutes and the most economical at $13. This made Bottle Hill the top choice among the three.
Madison, NJ, offers more than just picturesque streets; it is a town that savors its past while embracing the present. The wings at 54 Main Bar & Grille, Prospect Tavern, and Bottle Hill Tavern are not just culinary treats; they are a flavorful bridge between Madison’s history and its vibrant present.
