The Idaho University Homicides and Suspect Bryan Kohberger

On November 13, 2022, four University of Idaho students were found stabbed to death in an off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho. After an extensive hunt for a suspect, Bryan Kohberger, a 28-year-old criminology Ph.D. student at Washington State University, was arrested for the four homicides in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania on December 30, 2022.

According to CBS News, “Police responded to a report of an unconscious person around 11:58 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13. There, members of the Moscow Police Department found four University of Idaho students dead on the second and third floors of the home.” The victims of the attack were Ethan Chapin, 20; Xana Kernodle, 20; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; and Madison Mogen, 21.

Each of the four victims were students of the University of Idaho, majoring in sports management (Chapin), marketing (Kernodle, Mogen), and general studies (Goncalves). Police reported that on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1:45 a.m., Chapin and Kernodle returned home from a party at a Sigma Chi house on the University of Idaho campus. Mogen and Goncalves returned from The Corner Club, a bar in downtown Moscow, and from a food truck, also arriving home during the early morning hours.

An unharmed witness from the off-campus house reported seeing a masked man in black clothing who walked past her and toward a sliding door, a police investigator said. The search for the perpetrator of the quadruple homicide commenced – the public being requested to share any information or tips on the crime. Physical evidence left at the crime scene was a knife sheath. Additionally, a suspicious white 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra was caught on surveillance roaming the area prior to the attack.

Finally, on December 30, 2022, police announced 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger’s arrest in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania for the murders of the four Idaho University students. Kohberger was discovered in his family’s residence and taken into custody in Monroe County, Pennsylvania on Dec. 30, 2022. Bryan Christopher Kohberger was a criminology Ph.D. student at Washington State University, located approximately 8 miles from the crime scene in Moscow, Idaho.

He grew up in the Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania and attended Pleasant Valley High School, where he was reportedly bullied by peers. Kohberger is now being charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary.

Law enforcement was able to use forensic analysis from the knife sheath to trace Kohberger to the scene. On January 3, 2023, Kohberger was escorted to an extradition hearing at the Monroe County Courthouse in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. On January 4, 2023, Kohberger arrived at Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport, escorted by law enforcement.
