The Evolution of Spider-Man

Spider-Man, a comic book superhero who was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and featured in Marvel Comics publications, has appeared as a main character in many films.

Based off of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s Marvel Comics, ¨Spider-Man¨ was released on May 3, 2002 making $825 million in the Box Office. Starring Tobey Maguire, who plays the original Spider-Man, Kirsten Dunst, who plays Mary Jane Watson, and Willem Dafoe, who plays Green Goblin. Spider-Man is about a student named Peter Parker who was bitten by a genetically-altered spider. After being bitten, Peter gains superhuman strength and the spider-like ability to cling to any surface. He vows to use his abilities to fight crime.

To follow, Spider-Man 2 was released on June 30, 2004 making $789 million in the Box Office just slightly lower than its previous movie. Lastly, Spider-Man 3 was released on May 4, 2007, making its highest number out of all three movies with $894.9 million. It has been said that Tobey Maguire has paved the way for future Spider-Man movies.

The second series to follow Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movies was The Amazing Spider-Man, which was released on July 3, 2012 making $758 million in the Box Office. They also made a second movie which was released on May 2, 2014 making $709 million. Both movies starred Andrew Garfield, Spider-Man, and Emma Stone, who plays Gwen Stacy. The Amazing Spider-Man centers on Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man, who is trying to sort out who he is and exactly what his feelings are for his first crush, Gwen Stacy. Peter finds a mysterious briefcase that was his fathers, and begins a quest to solve his parents’ disappearance. Even though The Amazing Spider-Man is considered popular due to its Box Office success, Andrew Garfield’s series was considered the least popular by fans.

The most recent Spider-Man series to be released starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man has sparked large interest. Spider-Man: Homecoming was released on July 7, 2017 making $880.2 million in the Box Office. Spider-Man: Far From Home was released June 26, 2019 making $1.132 billion. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has also been featured in many crossovers with other marvel movies like Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Spider-Man: No Way From Home was the most recent Spider-Man movie which was released December 17, 2021 making $1.691 billion in the Box Office, starring not only Tom Holland, but also past Spider-Men like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Many people raved about how amazing and mind blowing this recent film was. Many people also said it was one of the greatest MCU movies ever made.

Spider-Man No Way Home, is ranked the most popular movie out of all of the Spider-Man movies with 93% rotten tomatoes. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man’s identity is now revealed, and Peter Parker is no longer able to separate his normal life from being a superhero. Peter asks for help from Doctor Strange, and the stakes become more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man. Even though Tom Holland’s series is considered one of the more popular Spider-Man series, it does not mean that Tom Holland is the most popular Spider-Man. It was said by movieweb,¨Tobey Maguire came out on the very top of the list, holding a 91.3% win percentage.¨ Clearly, Maguire is one of the most well-known versions of Peter Parker and has incredible fan support.

It has been rumored that Tom Holland will be starring in another series of Spider-Man movies and fans are eager to see more web-slinging on the big screen.  It seems fans can never get enough Spider-Man.
