Fourteen School Shootings have happened as of February 1st 2018
Last Wednesday, February 1st, the most recent school shooting has occurred in Sal Castro Middle School where a 12 year-old girl brought handgun to school and had “unintentionally” fired it in her classroom. Recent reports from the LA times have confirmed that four Students were injured in the Los Angeles Middle School. The LAPD believes that the shooting was unintentional and was a case of negligent discharge of a firearm (LA times).
A statement released by the LAPD said “At this time, the information suggests that this was an isolated incident, involving the negligent discharge of a firearm, where innocent children and a staff member were unfortunately injured,”.
Many more unfortunate cases of school shootings have occurred across the country including the deaths of two high schoolers in Marshall County High School. Reports also claim that an additional 16 people were wounded in the Kentucky High School two of whom are fatally wounded. The two victims Bailey Holt and Preston Cope were the unfortunate victims of this tragedy. Kentucky State Police Commissioner Richard W. Sanders that the fifteen year-old assailant, who was arrested at the scene, walked into the school at about 8:57am EST and started shooting. State police claim that the other victims range from ages 14 to 18, fourteen were male and six were female (CNN).
Another tragic accident happened earlier to the episode in Kentucky where a 16 year-old boy was said to have shot a 15 year old girl in Italy High school, located in Italy, Texas. The male student came into contact with his victim in the school cafeteria at around 7:53 am EST(NBC news).
These are a just a few of many incidents of school shootings that have occurred thus far in 2018. As young high schoolers, occurrences like are much disheartening.
