Boy’s Golf Team 2017
The start of the season for the Madison High School Boy’s Golf Team is right around the corner. The first match is scheduled for April 3 at Rockaway River against Montville. The boys started their season in the beginning of March. Most of the practice time thus far has been spent at the Anchor Golf Center range where the players have been toning their swings. With the help of Coach Millichap and Coach Diamond, players have made adjustments to their swing in order to be at their best by the start of the season.
The 2017 Madison High School Boys Golf roster is comprised of:
Lucas Artigliere, Alex Shraft, Ryan Selquist, Jimmy Bruno, Nick Taylor, Sam Kotkin, Mike Luciano, Gabe Schlicksup, Ryan Cobb, Brian Wallace, Justin Strada, Logan Sabel, Alex Jacqmin, Joe Purse, Nick Frank, Isaac Zapata, and Andrew Cho.
To be best prepared for the season, coach Millichap likes to schedule as many practice rounds as possible on actual golf courses, instead of the range, because he feels that it creates an atmosphere similar to that of an actual match. The practice rounds tend to take place at variety of different locations such as Madison Golf Club, Morris County Golf Club, and Pinch Brook Golf Course. However, with the snowstorm that hit in the middle of March, the opening of many courses was delayed, which prevented the team from getting as much exposure as they would have liked. They hope to fit as many practice rounds in as possible over the next couple of weeks before the regular season kicks off.
The Dodgers had a solid season last year finishing he season with a record of 15-3 and 6th in the county tournament. However, it is easy to tell that the younger players had their eyes set on bigger and better things. The team lost a couple of very solid senior players from last year including Jeb Burnett, John Kerr, Aaron Willsea and Junyi Sim. This will require other players to step up this year, including Ryan Selquist, Jimmy Bruno, and Nick Taylor.
When asked about the goals for the upcoming season, team captain Lucas Artigliere responded, “Our goal is to have an undefeated season, win the state tournament, and make an appearance at the Tournament of Champions.” Some may think that these goals are too far out of reach; but, there is not a single player on the team that does not believe that they can accomplish these goals. Lucas is also extremely excited for their matchup against division rivals Morristown Beard. Last year, Lucas won the County Tournament with an even par score of 72 and a second place finish at the State Sectional Tournament with a four over par 76 which qualified him for the Tournament of Champions.
The boys are extremely excited in anticipation for the season and we wish them luck on a great year.
