Jobs for High Schoolers
As a high schooler, making money can be difficult. Most of us are under 18, which limits which jobs we can apply for, and some places simply aren’t hiring. Despite these limitations, you can still apply to places that may not be looking for help, and when they do need it, your application is there waiting to be looked at. Another tip is to visit the place you’re looking to apply and introduce yourself; say you’re interested in working there, and that whether they need help or not, you would love to be considered for the job.
The most popular places where high schoolers apply to are local shops downtown that need students to work after school or on weekends. A great time to apply is in the fall, when college kids go back to school, leaving many businesses with job openings. Some places you may be interested in applying to are local pizzerias, ice cream parlours, boutiques or even a grocery store. If you find that no places in your town are looking to hire, maybe searching in the next town over would be best. This could be quite challenging for people who lack a car, but don’t worry, there’s still plenty of ways to make money without having to work in a store or in a different town. Many teenagers find that babysitting is the easiest way to make money, and all you need are connections and a good resume. You could babysit for a family friend, and since they already know you, you may be able to begin babysitting right away without any resume. If you decide to babysit for a family you don’t know, making a resume is a smart idea. It makes you look professional and will ensure them that their children will be in good hands.
When you finally get the call that you’ve been hired for the job you applied for, the next step is to get your working papers from the main office of your school. If you are over 18 you will not need to fill out these papers, but if you are a minor you must have them in order to be able to work.
If you need help finding a job, here are some suggestions:
- McCools
- Romanelli’s
- Sugar Rush
- Crowley Cupcakes
- Short stories
- Stop and Shop
- Walgreens
- Staples
- Starbucks
- Urban fire

Finding a job may be tough at first, but just keep in mind that patience is key. Applying for many jobs at once will also increase your chances of getting a job, and you may end up having a few options to choose from, which is always a bonus. Good luck, and happy job hunting!
