Sign up for Scavenger Hunt

This year MHS is hosting its first ever scavenger hunt on March 24th after school. The deadline to sign up is March 18th and teams of three will be allowed to compete. To find out more about the scavenger hunt MDO interviewed Owen Matthews, the present of the class of 2017.

MDO:  What was the inspiration for the scavenger hunt?

Owen: We knew we had March 24th booked on the school calendar for a Class of 2017 fundraiser. We also knew that we really wanted to use this date because there is no school the next day because of Good Friday. We were originally going to host a dance, but the student council just had one so we began to brainstorm other options. We knew we wanted something fun that wouldn’t be too expensive and would get the whole school involved. Brian Kraska (treasurer) suggested a scavenger hunt and we just ran with it.

MDO: Can you give a description of the scavenger hunt?

Owen: Each team has an individual path to follow. At each clue teams will find an individualized number or math symbol (+,-,x,/) and a riddle that will lead them to the next clue. At the end, teams will be left with a final combination/number. The team to report the correct number in the fastest time wins! Please note: the math is simple addition, subtraction etc… no math skills above an elementary school level are required. AND there will be snacks!

MDO: What are the rules of the scavenger hunt?

Owen: We designed a scavenger hunt in a manner in which it is pretty much impossible to cheat off of other teams, so there are no guidelines regarding that. However the basic rules are.
1. Teams are made up of of three students and must be paid in advance.
2. Teams must be checked in between 3:00 and 3:30 on March 24th.
3. The Scavenger Hunt Must be completed by 5 o’clock.
4. Sabotaging other teams by moving or tampering with clues is forbidden.
5. The team with the correct combination of numbers in the fastest time will win.

  1. The results will be announced on Monday, March 28th.

MDO: Will there be profits made from the scavenger hunt? If so, what are they being used for?

Owen: There will be profits from the scavenger hunt! The prize money was all donated so the fee for signing up is pure profit. The profits will go to the Class of 2017 (even though students from all grades are encouraged to participate). The Class of 2017 spends the bulk of its money on prom, the graduation gala, senior gift, and charity.
