Sunday, October 18th, Papermill Playhouse’s new show, The Bandstand, had its opening night. It is the world premiere of the show and stars Broadway veterans Laura Osnes, Corey Cott, and Beth Leavel. The show runs through November 8th.

Killing two people and injuring five, typhoon Koppu has forced 20,000 residents of Northern Philippines to leave their homes. The typhoon slowly became stronger as it lead to landslides and floods throughout the island of Luzon.

Hawaii has declared a state of emergency with the state’s homeless population. Since last year, there has been a 23% rise in homelessness in Hawaii, and governor David Ige hopes to implement programs to build more homeless shelters in the next few years.

A Chicago boy accidently shoots his brother with a gun while they were playing.  Their father is facing charges because he bought the gun and kept it in their home.

After about 10 hospital stays, four year old Mia Gonzalez was diagnosed with a malformation of her aorta that needed open heart surgery. Earlier this year a the hospital she was being treated at got a 3D printer that created exact replicas or organs that doctors can use to plan surgery and do practice operations. After making a model of Mia’s heart, the doctors were able to find a clear path to do the surgery, which decreased the surgery time as well as the recovery time of the patient

NASA is getting closer to making a long lasting mission to Mars a reality. They have advanced their technology so far, and solved enough problems, that people might be living on Mars by the 2030s.

The owner of Tinder, OkCupid, and other dating brands filled to go public on Friday, 10/16. Match group as more that 40 other dating brands and plans to list on the NASDAQ under the ticker “MTCH.” It’s goal is “to increase romantic creativity worldwide.”

Oprah Winfrey has joined the board of the dieting company Weight Watchers, and acquired 10% ownership. Winfrey’s involvement is a saving grace for the company, which has recently seen stock values plummet. As a satisfied user of the company’s weight-loss program, Winfrey plans to advocate its positive impact, and lead towards financial success.

Lamar Odom is communicating with body language and short sentences following his three day coma. Odom was in a coma after being found unconscious from an illegal drug combination while he was at a brothel in Las Vegas last Tuesday. He is expected to recover, not fully however since four of his vital organs had failed in his coma. He has a long road ahead of him.

Marine Biologists studying the coral reefs around the Solomon islands have discovered the first bioluminescent reptile, a variety of the hawksbill sea turtle.  Currently they are investigating the nature of this bizarre glowing reptile, as they have only speculative ideas as to the purpose of this adaptation.

As our space exploration get deeper and more extensive the next planet on the list is Mars. But the problem with this 140 million trip comes many issues. Along the way astronauts need places to refuel their rockets. The only viable option will hopefully come from asteroids that hope to be mined. Drilling into a moving object will not be easy but NASA hopes to have it up and running within five years.
