“Live from Madison High School, it’s Thursday night!”
Last Thursday was the Student Council’s first annual Faculty Night Live, an SNL spoof with acts from teachers and students, all hosted by Mr. Cecala and Mr. Bernich. Acts included performances by Elizabeth Monkemeier and Mitra Sharif, the band 1% Milk, and Joplin-like Ms. Wagner and Mr. Blackman, whose guitar skills were seriously impressive. The show opened with a slideshow of cute and hysterical pictures of teachers when they were kids, including an adorable Ms. Saltarelli, a sassy Mr. Largo, and a curly-haired Mr. Levine.
A highlight of the show was a spoof of “The Voice”, where teachers sang behind a curtain and the audience was tasked with guessing the singer. Mr. Largo brought out his inner Kurt Cobain with “Come As You Are” while Mrs. Turvey channelled Idina Menzel with “Let It Go”. The show also included a quiz session, proving that freshmen really don’t know anything about the school, let alone who the principal is.
Faculty Night Live even featured a parody of the SNL’s Weekend Update (titled “Weekday Update”), which covered such news as the fire at Magic Fountain and the teachers’ not-at-all-sarcastic love of the PARCC test.
Other sketches included “Mean Tweets”, where teachers read aloud mean things said about them on Twitter, and a Fear Factor-esque taste-testing, featuring Mr. Fisher, Mr. Ellrott, Ms. Prill, Ms. Papa-O’Brien, and some gross-looking slimy Korean anchovies.
The show was a fun night of endearingly awkward comedy, surprisingly impressive musical performances, and funny and relatable sketches that showed MHS that our teachers can have fun too. Though it may have been the Student Council’s first go, Faculty Night Live could become a new tradition, making teachers sing, dance, and make fools of themselves all for our entertainment, and we thank them for it.
