This Wednesday, a small group gathered in the G-hall small theatre to share poems of their choosing in front of an audience of their peers. The competition, Poetry Out Loud, is a unique contest available for students in which the individuals pick poems from established poets and practice reciting them with character and emotion.
There were about – 50 people in the theatre — both contestants and a handful of spectators on the sidelines. Robby Chalker went first during the initial round, finishing with Audrey Rowland. There was a short break for those who had to leave during lunch, and then the competition resumed for the second round. Contestants were judged by 4 judges who were also available to give lines in the event of someone accidentally forgetting. Some were nervous, others very confident, but all the participants tried their hardest and made the event an overall success.
The results of Poetry Out Loud were two second place winners, Mitra Sharif and Tyler Simeone, who will accompany Denny Harrington, the first place winner, onto the Regional competition in March. It was great to see this group of individuals step forward to support the arts in this tradition of MHS, and we wish the winners good luck in their further rounds.
