We’ve all been there. Our parents are making us do something we really, truly could not care less about. Memories pouring in yet? Any that make you internally groan and roll your eyes so hard you can see your brain? Yeah. Same.
Sasha and Malia Obama are no different – their father, President Barack Obama, brought them along for the ride to pardon a Thanksgiving Turkey (named Cheese) last Wednesday. An annual affair, Obama commented that he “doesn’t really understand it” but seemed to do the duty with gusto. Off to the side stood Sasha and Malia, looking “vaguely bored,” according to many news sites, totally unimpressed with yet another turkey. Their disinterest drew amused commentary.
Others were totally unimpressed with their attitudes.
Congressman aide Elizabeth Lauten posted a nasty message on Facebook directed at the girls, chastising them for taking little interest in the event, lashing out at their parents’ work, and adding snarky comments about the girls’ outfits on the back end.
The post attracted widespread backlash from Twitter and Facebook users; the hashtag “#FireElizabethLauten” went viral. Though Lauten deleted the message and posted an apology, her comments stuck.
Sasha, 13, and Malia, 16, looked like two kids on their day off from school, wearing what two kids on their day off from school would wear. Lauten, a young adult with a paying job and college education, should have had more sympathy for the teenagers who probably just wanted to be watching Netflix.
Next time, Ms. Lauten, check with Washington’s “What Not To Do When You’re In Politics” list. Number one? Taking jabs at the POTUS children. On the Internet. Take a leaf out of someone’s book who is currently experiencing “those awful teen years”: stuff on here stays here forever.
Update: Elizabeth Lauten resigned Monday, December 1st, after public pressure.
