Every Tuesday, from 7:30 – 8:30, the members of Glyphs, Madison High School’s Literary Magazine, gather to discuss poetry, short stories, and artwork submitted anonymously and published by name. On December 5th, from 7:00 – 10:00, members of Glyphs and the student body will be able to showcase their talent in a non-anonymous format through readings and musical performances. “Glyphs is always something I put time aside for,” notes senior Emma Sheeleigh, a fan of both the conversations regarding pieces submitted for consideration for the annual magazine or the website and the elaborate food themes, ranging from the recent America Day to Chips and Dip. “I’m looking forward to spending more time with the people involved and seeing the wonderful talents we have at the coffeehouse,” Emma continues.
The coffeehouse will be held at Short Stories, Madison’s newly-opened independent bookstore. Funded by Kickstarter, Short Stories prides itself on being a “Community Book Hub” and regularly hosts art galleries and live music. Considering recent performances at recent Glyphs coffeehouses, such as Whitney Xu and Emma Yost’s rendition of “Valerie,” made famous by Amy Winehouse, or Shira Buchsbaum’s delivery of “If I Should Have a Daughter” by Sarah Kay, the coffeehouse will fit in perfectly with Short Stories’ community initiative.
“The songs and poems are always so much fun to listen to,” explains Tyler Simeone, the magazine’s Submissions Coordinator. “Plus, there’s always a ton of food to look forward to.” If the weekly Glyphs meetings are anything to go by, the coffeehouse will be a culinary event to remember. Food editor Helene Rowland, who curates the offerings at the meetings, has proven herself time and time again. Don’t miss out on the Glyphs coffeehouse!
